Joan Manning   Joan Manning

Joan has been a graphic designer for many years and trained initially at the college of printing, Watford. Last year she visited Nant y Coy with examples of paper sculpture and is currently exploring ‘mixed media’ painting. This attempt to break away from the rigid discipline of graphic design allows Joan more personal expression. She will be using the residency at Nant y Coy to demonstrate this and to share the experience with friend and fellow artist Sarah Bovey. Joan hopes to keep a sketchbook/diary of her residency week in this beautiful part of Wales.

Later this year Joan is starting a new career in teaching general Art to adults. She has a strong belief in lifelong learning and personal growth through art and craft and wants to encourage this growth in others.

Joan believes that "...as children we all express creativity without judgement or the inner critic that, as adults, sometimes prevents our pursuit of personal expression through the visual arts". She has also discovered a healing and spiritual element by playing with paint and colour in an exploratory way because it "...allows us to bring to consciousness things from the sub-conscious which have relevance to our lives."

Sarah Bovey        Joan Manning

Living in the Blackdown Hills, East Devon, Sarah Bovey has worked for many years as a horticulturist and garden designer; her interest in drawing and painting grew as a way of "letting go" the constraints of drawing to-scale plans and designs. A regular student on Margaret Merritt's courses, Sarah has learned to be adventurous with colour and mixed media. Her paintings reflect her deep affection and knowledge of the landscape around her, and in particular trees and woodlands.

Sarah can be contacted by email on: indigo2701@googlemail.com
